GITEX Africa 2026- US Ambassador Recalls Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

US Ambassador Duke Buchan III

Rabat – US Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III recalled the international support that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan has been receiving, including from both the EU and the UN.

The ambassador made his remarks during the GITEX Africa 2026 opening ceremony, which is taking place in Marrakech from April 7-9.

In his speech, the US ambassador recalled his personal involvement in the Western Sahara process, stating that he had dedicated hundreds of hours to the initiative through meetings and consultations with the main parties involved in the regional dispute.

Buchan III emphasized the US commitment to continue supporting Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only credible path toward a lasting solution and prosperity, recalling that over 100 countries support the Moroccan plan.

“Thank you, Morocco,” he said in his opening speech in front of participants, officials, and visitors attending GITEX Africa, the largest tech event– bringing together thousands of exhibitors and participants each year.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of Morocco’s economy, and cited its business climate, marked by smart reforms, stability, and certainty, which are key in attracting investors.

For the US government, Morocco is constantly investing in its people, describing the North African country as a country that “builds” and “invests.”

He added that the US is committed to supporting Morocco in achieving King Mohammed VI’s vision, noting that it is “very vital” to recognize Morocco as the only African country where investments are steadily growing.

The remarks reflect the US-Morocco longstanding partnership and cooperation across all sectors.

On Monday, Buchan pointed to the US leadership in AI and cybersecurity, among other sectors.

“GITEX Africa 2026 kicks off tomorrow in Marrakech, and the United States is showing up strong. Dozens of U.S. companies are ready to showcase U.S. leadership…. And building partnerships here in Morocco,” the ambassador wrote on X.

The ambassador also recalled the strong ties between the two countries, celebrating 250 years.

“Morocco is emerging as a digital gateway to Africa, and U.S. companies are planning roots,” the ambassador concluded.
