Rabat – Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has defended Kylian Mbappé’s freedom to travel during his recovery but reminded everyone that the club’s values come first.

Speaking after Madrid’s 2‑0 win over Espanyol, Arbeloa balanced support for his star forward with a firm message about discipline.

Mbappé recently traveled to Italy while recovering from injury, a move that drew criticism in Spanish media.

Arbeloa dismissed the controversy, saying the medical staff oversee all treatment plans and decide when players need to attend clinics. “Mbappé can do what he wants in his free time, like any other player,” Arbeloa said. “But Real Madrid is bigger than any individual.”

Arbeloa also highlighted Vinícius Júnior’s performance against Espanyol. The Brazilian scored twice in the second half, securing the win and delaying Barcelona’s title celebrations.

“Vinícius was a constant threat and proved himself as a leader again,” Arbeloa noted. He explained that he substituted the forward only to avoid suspension before next week’s Clásico against Barcelona.

Madrid’s victory

The match at Cornellà‑El Prat ended 2‑0 thanks to Vinícius’ goals in the 55th and 66th minutes. The result kept Madrid 11 points behind Barcelona with four games left, ensuring the title race remains mathematically open.

Moroccan internationals Omar Hilali and Brahim Díaz both started, adding a North African presence to the contest.

The first half was balanced, with chances for both sides, but Madrid raised their intensity after the break. Vinícius’ pace and finishing made the difference, while Espanyol struggled to contain him.

Madrid’s win sets up a high‑stakes Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10. Arbeloa stressed that discipline and commitment to the club’s values will be crucial. “Real Madrid was built on talent and hard work,” he said. “I want the players to understand that no one is above the institution.”
