Rabat – The Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric has expressed condolences and solidarity with Morocco following the magnitude 7 earthquake that hit the country on Friday night.
“The Secretary-General was profoundly saddened to learn of the earthquake that hit Morocco today which claimed many lives,” a statement from Dujarric said on Saturday.
The statement continued to express the UNSG’s solidarity with the government and the people of Morocco, and “his most sincere condolences” to the victims’ families.
“The United Nations is ready to assist the government of Morocco in its efforts to assist the impacted population,” the statement concluded.
On Friday night, Moroccans across the country felt a magnitude 7 earthquake that dealt significant damage to various villages around the epicenter.
According to official figures, the death toll currently stands at 1,037, with 1204 injured and 721 being in critical condition. The number is expected to rise further as rescue operations continue.
