Casablanca — Morocco doubled its direct tomato exports to Finland in the 2025/26 season, setting a new bilateral record, according to EastFruit.

Between July 2025 and February 2026, Finnish imports of Moroccan tomatoes reached 2,200 tons, worth nearly 6 million euros. The volume was twice as high as in the 2024/25 season and exceeded the combined total of the previous two years.

It also stood 50% above the previous record, registered in 2022/23.

Morocco’s tomato exports to Finland started on a much smaller scale. In the 2001/02 season, shipments amounted to just 37 tons. The country passed the 1,000-ton mark in 2022/23, before crossing 2,000 tons for the first time this season.

Finland produces much of its own tomatoes during the summer, but relies heavily on imports in winter. The Netherlands and Spain remain the main suppliers, together accounting for 75% to 80% of Finnish tomato imports.

Spain usually leads between December and March, while Dutch tomatoes dominate from May to October. France has traditionally ranked third, with around 15% of imports. But in early 2026, French shipments fell sharply as Moroccan exports rose.

EastFruit said the change reflects a shift in trade routes. France has long acted as a logistics hub, re-exporting Moroccan tomatoes to Finland and other European markets.

Moroccan exporters are now increasingly sending products directly, bypassing French distribution centers. After increasing direct sales to Denmark and Norway last season, Morocco sharply expanded direct exports to Finland this season.

As a result, volumes that were previously recorded in trade statistics as imports from France are now being attributed directly to Morocco.
