Rabat – Denmark announced that it will maintain temporary border control measures at its borders following a series of hostile and Islamophobic Quran-burning demonstrations.
The Danish Justice Ministry announced the news today, saying that security services deemed it “necessary” to maintain the “intensified efforts at the international Danish borders” at the request of the Danish Security and Intelligence Service.
Tight border controls were introduced on August 3 to remain for one week, but now will extend to August 17.
Denmark and Sweden introduced the security measures following a worldwide uproar in response to the Islamophobic and heinous Quran-burning demonstrations carried out by a group of far-right extremists.
The Danish government warned in July that the reckless and “deeply offensive” Quran-burning demonstrations could have “significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security.”
The comments came from Danish Foreign Affairs minister Lars Lokee Rasmssen, who said that the few individuals who committed Quran-burning acts do not represent the values “Danish society is built on.”
He also pledged a legal framework that the Danish government is working to intervene in situations where “other countries, cultures and religions are being insulted, and where this could have significant negative consequences for Denmark, not least with regard to security.”
Far-right activists in both Sweden and Denmark have continuously and repeatedly resorted to burning copies of the Quran during Islamophobic protests.
The proliferation of such anti-Islam acts caused a worldwide uproar and drew strong condemnation from many countries, including in the MENA region.
Some countries took swift decisions, including Morocco, which decided to recall its ambassador to Stockholm in response to the repeated offensive acts affecting over two billion Muslims across the world.
Iraq, for its part, expelled the Swedish ambassador to Baghadad and threatened to cut diplomatic ties with the Nordic country if similar acts continue.
