Rabat – Portugal booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Croatia in an emotional night that saw Cristiano Ronaldo move one step closer to his ultimate goal.

Exactly one year after the death of Diogo Jota in a tragic car accident, Portugal booked their place in the World Cup Round of 16 against Spain with a dramatic victory over Croatia.

The victory carried more significance than qualification alone. Throughout the tournament, Portugal’s players have worn bracelets bearing Diogo Jota’s name, whose death alongside his brother André Silva continues to leave a deep mark on Portuguese football history.

After the final whistle blew, Ronaldo honored Jota once again by wearing his jersey when celebrating the win with his teammates and fans.

This emotional evening also brought an end to one of football’s greatest international careers, Luka Modric.

Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate and one of the best midfielders of his generation. The two shared years of success in Madrid, winning 4 UEFA Champions League titles together, but the World Cup was cruel to them and told them to kick one another on their last international dance.

After last night, Ronaldo’s ultimate dream of lifting football’s biggest prize remains alive, while Modric’s final World Cup journey has come to an end.

Portugal will now turn their attention to their upcoming Round of 16 showdown with Spain, where Ronaldo will continue chasing the only trophy missing from his mesmerizing career.

Croatia, on the other hand, left the tournament having said goodbye to a captain who has forever transformed their nation’s football history.

Last night will always be remembered as one of football’s most emotional moments as Portugal honored Diogo Jota, Ronaldo moved one step closer to his ultimate dream, and Modric delivered his final performance on the World Cup stage.
