Nordic Nations Demand Sweeping FIFA Governance Reforms, Back Resignation Calls

Meknes – Six Nordic football associations formally withdrew their support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Sunday, demanding broad governance reforms across world soccer’s governing body.

In a rare joint statement out of Helsinki, the six Nordic FIFA members, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the Faroe Islands, formally joined three major regional confederations in calling for Infantino’s resignation as FIFA President.

According to Reuters, the associations also backed calls for an independent investigation into Infantino’s controversial plan to sell stakes in tournaments like the World Cup to private equity investors.

“The six Nordic football associations have lost confidence in FIFA’s president and are concerned about the organization’s governance and decision-making at the highest level,” the group said in a statement.

Aligning their efforts with Europe’s governing body, the associations signaled a coordinated front against FIFA’s current leadership.

“The Nordic football associations stand united with UEFA and support the measures that the organization and its national member associations have jointly proposed,” they added.

Demanding structural protections against commercialization, the federations insisted on concrete safeguards for the sport’s future governance.

“We expect FIFA to provide binding guarantees that the organization’s governance or competitions will never again be opened up to private ownership,” they explained.

Pressure is mounting on Infantino from across the globe, with three major regional confederations, Europe’s UEFA, Asia’s AFC, and CONCACAF, which governs North and Central America alongside the Caribbean, all demanding his resignation.

With opposition continuing to build ahead of the upcoming election, Infantino faces a critical test of his leadership as key regional stakeholders push for immediate structural change.
