Moroccan police arrested a suspect in possession of 2.4 tonnes of cannabis resin.

Police made the arrest on Thursday in collaboration with security services from the General Directorate of Territorial  Surveillance (DGST).

The suspect, 40, was arrested upon his arrival from a city in Northern Morocco.

Searches of his vehicle enabled police to identify 2 tonnes and 400 kilograms of cannabis.

Police put the suspect in custody pending more investigations to determine the circumstances of the case and arrest other potential accomplices.

The operation is part of Morocco’s intensified effort to address drug trafficking.

In 2022, Morocco’s security services tackled 82,950 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs.

In 2022, police seized 191 tonnes and 158 kilograms of cannabis during security operations, according to the annual report from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

Over 103,000 suspects, including 261 foreigners, were sent to court over their alleged involvement in drug felonies.
