Rabat- Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) forecasts heavy rainstorms to hit several provinces across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

The DMN predicted between 80 and 110 millimeters of rainfall which is expected to hit  Chefchaouen, Larache, Tetouan, Al Hoceima and Ouezzane from Friday 9am to Saturday 10am.

Rainfall between 20 and 30 millimeters is forecast in the provinces of Essaouira, Safi and Chichaoua, On Thursday from 3pm to 6pm.

Other Moroccan provinces would likely see heavy rainfall from Thursday 3pm to Friday 5am. The list of provinces includes Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Al Haouz, Tiznit, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Agadir-Ida-Outanane, Sidi Ifni, Guelmim and Tan Tan, which will experience rainfall of 30 to 50 mm.

Strong winds (50 to 70 km/h) could also disturb the Atlantic coast north of Essaouira and the western Rif.

Rainfall ranging between 40 and 80 mm will also affect the provinces of Tangier-Asilah, Fahs-Anjra, Kenitra, Sidi Kacem and Taounate, on Friday 01 am to Saturday 10am.

Many people eagerly await rain following Morocco’s record-breaking drought.

The severe drought has had a significant impact on the country’s agricultural output, with cereal production in 2022 falling to its lowest level since 2008.

The drought has also had an impact on Morocco’s water supplies, which have decreased to 85% in basins across the country between 2021 and 2022.

In October, King Mohammed VI called for new and urgent action to address water scarcity and the other societal crises that are affecting all sectors and economic growth in Morocco.
