Rabat – Morocco’s national futsal team today defeated Iran in the final of the 2022 Continental Futsal Championship, clinching a 3-4 victory in Bangkok, Thailand. Organized by Thailand’s Football Association (FAT), the tournament took place between September 11 and 16.

The well-deserved win follows the national team’s outstanding performance in the tournament, as well as in recent competitions, notably the Arab Futsal Cup.

The Moroccan squad produced a spectacular performance throughout the final against Iran. The first round of the match ended with Morocco scoring two goals. Youssef Jawad scored the first goal one minute after the game kicked off, followed by a second goal by Atlas Lion Khalid Bouzid.

As the second round began, the Persian team scored their first goal through Ahmad Said El Abbassi, followed by a second goal shortly after thanks to El Houssein El Taleb.

Morocco was quick to react, as Atlas Lion Ismail Wadouh scored his team’s third goal. As the end of the second round was fast approaching, Iran scored its third goal seconds from the final whistle, leading to a 3-3 tie between the two teams.

In an ultimate display of determination, Youssef Jawad launched a full-scale attack, scoring Morocco’s fourth and winning goal during the second round of extra time, 36 seconds before the final whistle.

The North African country’s qualification to the finals came after the national team handily beat Finland in the tournament’s semifinals with a 1-4 victory yesterday.

The Moroccan team’s global ranking has improved after winning the Arab Futsal Cup last June, placing the country first in the Arab world and on the African continent. The ranking placed Morocco in the 8th spot worldwide, jumping up by five spots compared to December 2021.
