Rabat – Morocco’s national team achieved outstanding results at the 29th edition of the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad, placing first in both the individual and team categories.

Moroccan student Mouad El Noua won first place in the individual category with a score of 24 out of 24. The Moroccan national team ranked first in the teams’ category, alongside Tunisia, with both teams receiving a score of 152. South Africa finished third with 119 points.

The Moroccan team, which boasted a diverse cohort of three males and three females, claimed a total of five medals.

Morocco’s Mouad El Noua and Saad El Chaairi won gold medals, while Adam El Kharraz and Hiba El Qasmi won silver medals, and Inass El Cherghaoui won a bronze.

The competition crowned Tunisian Yasmine El Zahi “Queen of African Mathematics 2022.”

The competition took place from June 19 to June 28 at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Benguerir, Morocco.

The Math&Maroc association congratulated the Moroccan national team for their excellent results, wishing them the best of luck at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO).

The 63rd edition of the IMO will take place between July 6 and 16, 2022, in Oslo, Norway.

The African competition saw the participation of students from nine African countries, including Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Mauritania, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Tunisia.

According to the PAMO, the annual competition targets “the best pupils in Mathematics of the Secondary Education who are less than 20 years old,” with the aim of fostering interest in math and improving the mathematical skills of the African youth.

The competition consists of two 4.5-hour rounds in which participants must answer three questions in advanced calculus and trigonometry per round.

This is not the first time Moroccan students have distinguished themselves in the African competition. Last year, the Moroccan team won two gold medals in the 2021 PAMO, which was hosted virtually in Tunisia on May 23 and 24.
