Rabat – Morocco and Belgium signed on Monday an agreement related to implementing the 2014 Social Security Convention agreement, Morocco’s health ministry announced in a press release.

The agreement was signed in Rabat by Morocco’s Minister of Health and Social Protection, Khalid Ait Taleb, and Belgium’s ambassador to Morocco, Veronique Petit. Under the new deal, the terms of the 2014 Social Security agreement will be implemented starting June 1 of this year.

The Social Security Convention agreement, which was signed on February 18, 2014, will replace a previous social security agreement that Morocco and Belgium signed in June 1968.

The 2014 agreement will allow citizens from both countries to benefit from the same rights and obligations of other citizens in the same country that they work in. For example, if you are a Moroccan and work in Belgium, this agreement guarantees that you will have the same working rights as other Belgian workers; and vice versa.

As well as guaranteeing family allowances for retired workers, it will also guarantee the right to health treatments for retired people who will return to reside in their country of origin.

Morocco has a bilateral social security agreement with several countries around the world, guaranteeing the rights of migrant workers in signatory countries.

According to the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Morocco signed its first social security convention agreement with France in 1965, which was later repealed by an updated agreement in 2007.

The 1968 social security partnership with Belgium was Morocco’s second agreement in the field with a foreign country. Morocco signed its latest bilateral social security agreement with Luxembourg in 2006.
