Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) has provided Belgian authorities with essential intelligence about a Belgian national of Moroccan origin, who was inciting for and preparing to commit “imminent terrorist projects.”
A statement from the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) said that the DGST’s intelligence had enabled Belgian authorities to arrest the suspect who is now in custody for further investigations.
Moroccan security services identified the suspect following an ongoing investigation with an ISIS-suspect that the BCIJ arrested on Wednesday in Tata, in southeast Morocco.
Research and investigation by Moroccan anti-terrorism units resulted in identifying a a money transfer in European currency that the suspect arrested in Belgium sent to the ISIS suspect apprehended in Tata.
The money transfer was “the first payment” the suspect in Belgium sent to finance the acquisition of chemical materials used in the manufacturing of explosives, BCIJ added.
Investigations showed that the suspect was also invovled in inciting the creation of a local terrorist cell to undermine Morocco’s security.
The suspects were plotting terrorist attacks against foreign citizens, senior government and security officials, as well as military and security headquarter, according to the same source. .
The suspect apprehended in Morocco was also planning to commit terrorst attacks on prison instutions through ISIS-inspired approaches, including car bombs.
The suspect made three attempts to manufacture explosive devices using chemicals.
BCIJ went on to add that its services are still investigating the case to arrest all potential acocmplices invovled in the terror projects.
This is not the first time Morocco’s security services have handed essential intelligence that helped its international partners to avert terrorist attacks, arrest would-be terrorists, and dismantle terrorist cells.
In July 2021, DGST provided the US with intelligence on American soldier James Bridges, who was attempting to assist ISIS in attacking US troops in the Middle East.
Previously, Morocco also provided the US with information about the Khalden training camp, one of Osama bin Laden’s main military training camps in Afghanistan.
