Rabat – Swedish furniture retailer IKEA this week launched its Morocco-themed “Hembjuden” collection that celebrates Moroccan design ahead of Ramadan. The popular furniture store, known for its affordable minimalist flat-pack furniture, highlighted that its new collection uses “a mix of floral geometric patterns inspired by modern Moroccan tiles.”

The “Hembjuden” collection (meaning “home offer” in Swedish) features a variety of items that are directly inspired by traditional Moroccan designs commonly seen in souks across the north African country. In IKEA stores across Morocco, the collection is labeled the “Ramadan collection.”

The collection shows the typical geometric designs that are a common feature in Moroccan architecture since the times of Al Andalus. It includes plates showing Moroccan floral designs and metal lamps that look eerily similar to the items sold by Morocco’s renowned handicraft artisans.

An article about the new IKEA collection in design-oriented outlet Living Etc highlighted how trendy Moroccan designs are, especially when paired with the minimalist furniture that the Swedish company is known for. “It’s right on time in terms of trends,” author Megan Black commented, linking the increased popularity of Moroccan designs to the popular Netflix series “Inventing Anna.”

British freelance designer Jennifer Idrizi designed the collection. She commented on Instagram: “I had Morocco on my mind when designing this collection.” Describing the collection as influenced by “bold colourful Moroccan tiles in contrast to intricate black and white patterns,” she noted, “how could I not be inspired by such a rich culture of pattern and colour?”
