Rabat – President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will arrive in Morocco today, February 8, to hold talks with several Moroccan officials.

This will be von der Leyen’s first visit to Morocco as President of the European Commission, said the EU executive spokesperson Eric Mamer to Morocco’s state agency.

The visit is part of the bilateral partnership between Morocco and the European Union that the president is committed to strengthening, Mamer noted.

Morocco and the EU launched the “Euro-Moroccan Partnership of Shared Prosperity” in June 2019 in Brussels.

The partnership intends to further deepen bilateral relations based on common ambitions while also strengthening regional and Euro-African cooperation and supporting effective multilateralism.

The partnership improves bilateral ties based on four structural areas: convergence of values, economic convergence and social cohesion, an area of shared knowledge, and an area of political consultation and enhanced cooperation on security.

It also focuses on two fundamental axes of a  horizontal nature in which specific operational actions will also be carried out, namely cooperation on the environment and the fight against climate change, as well as cooperation on mobility and migration, which will be mutually reinforcing.

The EU-Morocco partnership is a necessary tool to respond to the world’s challenges, both parties have insisted. Morocco is considered to be one of the EU’s key partners in the region due to its political stability and the reforms it has carried out to improve security in the region.

Most recently, Morocco spoke of the need for a new, win-win-based partnership between the European Union (EU) and Africa in terms of political and trade cooperation.

Ryad Mezzour, Moroccan Minister of Industry, has notably stressed that the EU-Africa partnership represents a guarantee of “sustainability,” noting that the agreements boosted the growth of trade relations and investments between Africa and Europe.
