Rabat – A small village near Chefchaouen, a province in northern Morocco, witnessed a shocking incident on February 1 as a 5 years-old child named Rayan fell into a 60-meter deep water well.

Attaching a camera phone to a cord that went through the well until it reached the child, local authorities managed to verify that Rayan is still alive after spending over 24 hours in the water well.

However, civil protection services are finding it difficult to save Rayan due to the depth and narrowness of the well.

According to reports, the rescue operation began around five in the evening of Tuesday until around two in the morning, during which authorities tried all the equipment and means but to no avail.

The rescue operation is still ongoing as local authorities deploy bulldozers and other equipment to dig around the water well, in hopes of saving Rayan.

However, bulldozers might be dangerous and could injure or even kill the child unintentionally.

One of the young men in the village who volunteered to go down to the well, tied his legs with a rope and went down twice but failed to reach its end as he could not go beyond a meter depth due to the narrowness of the hole and the lack of oxygen to breathe.

News of the incident has gone viral on social media platforms, with many Moroccans sharing videos of the bulldozers in the area near the well.

It remains to be seen whether this method will facilitate the rescue operation.
