Rabat – The activity rate in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region saw an increase of 5.7% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, according to the regional directorate of the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
HCP’s report indicates that the labor market increased from 45.2% in the third quarter of 2020 to 50.9% during the same period in 2021.
On a national scale, the labor market escalated from 43.5% to 45.1%, HCP added, noting that the regional activity rate has exceeded its pre-pandemic level.
The regional rate fell from 52% in the second quarter (Q2) of 2021 to 50.9% in the third quarter (Q3) of the same year, showing a decline of 1.1 points, against a decline from 46.1 to 45.1% at the national level between Q2 and Q3.
During the first nine months of 2021, the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region recorded the highest activity rate compared to the other regions of the Kingdom, followed by the Casablanca-Settat region (47.7%), and Marrakech-Safi region (46%).
Meanwhile, the regions of Draa-Tafilalet (40.9%), Souss-Massa (41.2%), and Oriental (42.1%) recorded the lowest rates.
The HCP noted that the activity rate in the northern region stood at 45.8% in Q3 2021, compared to 39.6% during the same period a year earlier, exceeding its pre-pandemic level (40% in Q3-2019).
Despite the government’s efforts to boost job opportunities among fresh graduates, the unemployment rate increased by 0.5%, according to a report issued by the HCP in August 2021.
Urban areas witnessed a sharp increase, going from 15.6% to 18.2% in the second quarter of the year, while rural areas experienced a significant decline in unemployment, going from 7.2% to 4.8%.
University graduates experienced a 25.3% increase in unemployment, while those with medium education level experienced a 17.6% increase, the report added.
Currently, there are around 1,605,000 unemployed people in Morocco. Many people lost their jobs when several sectors experienced a shutdown due to the drastic economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.
