Rabat – Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister Carlos Alberto Franco Franca has said he will visit Morocco “soon,” emphasizing the importance of cooperation between Brasilia and Rabat.
The Brazilian top diplomat made his announcement this week on the sidelines of the decoration ceremony of the former Brazilian president, Fernando Affondo Collor de Mello.
Morocco conferred the Grand Cordon of Alaouite Wissam, the equivalent of the highest honor in the Legion of Merit, to the former president.
The Brazilian foreign Minister said Morocco “occupies a central position in North Africa as a bridge to other countries and continents.”
He emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation not only in trade but also on the cultural level.
“Bilateral relations are very harmonious and have great potential for development. I am optimistic about the future” of Morocco-Brazil relations, he said.
The official also expressed hope to see both countries diversifying trade relations, saying: “Cooperation between Brazil and Morocco could be even more complementary.”
He also emphasized the importance of cooperating more within the UN and international forums.
“Brazil was recently elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (for the period 2022-2023) and we can coordinate positions on the basis of our common values,” he added.
Morocco and Brazil share good diplomatic relations and enjoy strong trade ties.
In 2020, Brazil emphasized the importance of concluding agreements with Arab countries.
“Brazil seeks to speed up the signing of free trade agreements between the Southern Common Market (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) and several Arab countries, including Morocco,” Roberto Fendt, the Special Secretary for Foreign Trade and of International Affairs of the Brazilian Ministry of Economy, said at last year’s Brazil-Arab Countries Economic Forum.
According to trade statistics website Trading Economics, Morocco’s exports to Brazil were estimated at $1.15 billion in 2020, while its imports from the South American giant reached $770.17 million during the same period.
