Rabat – Morocco’s carrier Royal Air Maroc announced that it will suspend all its flights from and to Morocco, starting November 29, 11:59 p.m. to December 13, 11:59 p.m. local time.
The suspension of flights comes at the request of Morocco’s authorities, Royal Air Maroc said.
Earlier today, Moroccan authorities have announced that they are suspending all direct flights to the kingdom for two weeks, starting on Monday the 29th of November, citing fears of the Omicron variant.
Some mutations in the new COVID variant are known for their ability to help the virus escape the immune system and resist antibodies.
Tayeb Hamdi, a health professional and researcher in health policies and systems, said this week that Morocco has taken the necessary measures to reduce the risk of importing cases of the new variant of Omicron.
Hamdi said the new variant combies 30 mutations, 10 of which concern a part of the virus associated with transmissibility and immune protection.
“If this new variant turns out to be slightly more transmissible than Delta, which is currently the dominant one, the situation should not see a noticeable change, whereas if the transmissibility reaches 50% or more than Delta, the world will face new, very strong waves [of COVID infections], especially in under-vaccinated countries,” he warned.
