Rabat – The High Commission for Planning (HCP) published a new version of its annual report on the status of women in Morocco entitled “Moroccan Women in Figures: 20 years of progress,” on Friday, October 15 .

This new version of the annual publication is a collection of statistical data describing the evolution of the situation of Moroccan women in several areas, in the form of graphs and infographics.

In the report, one of the many topics highlighted was the participation of Moroccan women in the national workforce.

The HCP indicates that women’s participation in the labor market in 2020 remains low, despite the data indicating an increase in girls’ enrollment in schools.

19.9% of Moroccan women are currently active in the Moroccan workforce, compared to 70.4% for men.

According to the report, 47.3% of employed women work as employees (51.7% for men), 17.7% are self-employed (39.8% for men), and 35% fulfill unpaid jobs (8.6% for men).

The “agriculture, forestry and fishing” sector remains the leading employer for Moroccan women, as 44.8% of the active female population works within the sector.

The service industry is the second largest employer of Moroccan women in the country, accounting for 40.4% of female employers, while the “industry and handicraft” sectors occupy third place (14.2%).

Female agricultural and fishery workers, including skilled workers, represent 36% of employed women compared to 12.6% for men.

8.6% work as managers, senior executives or members of liberal professions, compared to 3.8% for men.

Despite the relatively small portion of active Moroccan women in the country, women head of households have seen their monetary poverty rate decrease from 3.9% in 2014 to 1% in 2019.

Economic vulnerability of the same societal fragment declined over the 2014-2019 period, going from 10.6% in 2014 to 6.7% in 2019 nationally.

A similar improvement was also noted in rural areas, as the economic vulnerability rate fell from 8.2% to 4.8% in urban areas, and from 17.4% to 12.4% in rural areas.

The proportion of women-owned businesses reached 12.8% in 2019. The service sector has the highest percentage of female managers (17.3%), followed by trade (13.8%), industry (12.6%) and construction (2.6%).

According to the size of the company, women are more present in very small and medium sized companies (13.4% and 10.2% respectively).
