Rabat – Morocco is expected to attend a virtual event to be hosted on Friday by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, in commemoration of the Abraham Accords.
In addition to Morocco, the UAE and Bahrain will also attend the meeting, Reuters reported.
The news outlet quoted diplomatic officials as saying that the event is organized to mark the first anniversary of the establishment of relations between Israel and two Arab countries – Bahrain and the UAE – in September 2020.
Morocco also subsequently signed the US-brokered accords in a tripartite Israel-Morocco-US declaration in December of last year.
The agreements were signed in the final months of President’s Trump’s term. And while many commentators hoped that a new US administration would review some elements of the accords, especially the agreement between Morocco and Israel, President Biden’s administration has consistently signaled that it will uphold all the terms of the Abraham Accords.
In August, Blinken congratulated Israeli FM Yair Lapid on his visit to Morocco and reaffirmed the US’ commitment to working with both nations to deepen relations.
“We welcome the visit by Israeli Foreign Minister @yairlapid to Morocco and congratulate the Kingdom of Morocco and Israel on the reopening of the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat. We will continue to work with Israel and Morocco to strengthen all aspects of our partnerships,” Blinken said.
Ned Price, the spokesperson of the State Department, also expressed US support for the visit.
“We enthusiastically congratulate two close partners – Morocco and Israel – as Morocco today welcomes Israeli Foreign Minister @yairlapid on his first visit to the Kingdom, another important step in the strengthening of their relationship,” he said.
In July, the US State Department expressed its satisfaction with the inauguration of direct flights between Tel Aviv and Marrakech.
In a tweet, the state department said the US was delighted to see the inaugural flight between the two destinations.
In addition to Friday’s event, Morocco also participated on Monday, September 13, in an event held in New York to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Abraham accords.
Omar Hilale, Morocco’s ambassador at the UN, represented the North African country in the event.
