Rabat – Six Moroccan public universities are ranked in the new Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of Arab universities.

Marrakech’s university of Cadi Ayyad is ranked 41st. The university of Rabat is placed in the 51-60 range, and Casablanca’s university in the 61-70 range. The universities of Kenitra (71-80), Fez (81-90) and Oujda (+101) are next.

Cadi Ayyad University (UCA) of Marrakech has been recognized for its excellence in this ranking. The university ranked in the national level, and placed second in the continental level, behind the Tunisian University of Sfax, recognized as Africa’s best university.

The top position is awarded to King Abdulaziz University (Saudi Arabia), while Qatar University ranks second in the MENA region, and King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST, Saudi Arabia) comes third. Saudi universities accounted for five of the top ten spots on the list.

Khalifa University and United Arab Emirates University ranked sixth and seventh respectively in the rankings.

The ninth position was given to the American University of Beirut (AUB), while Zewail City of science, technology and innovation (Egypt) ranked 10th.

The ranking is based on three main criteria: reputation, cooperation, and social impact. During the five-year period (2016-2020), universities must accumulate at least 500 scientific publications.

Since 2004, Times Higher Education has published reliable data on the performance of universities across the world.

Back in April of this year, seven Moroccan universities secured spots in the prestigious THE Impact Rankings.

The Impact Rankings included metrics based on each of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and one overall ranking.

Kenitra’s Ibn Tofail, the International University of Rabat, Meknes’ Moulay Ismail, Casablanca’s Hassan II University, Fez’s Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah, Ifrane’s Al Akhawayn, and Hassan I University have all made it into the rankings.
