Rabat – A fire which started on Saturday evening in Chefchaouen’s Ghamara forest has devoured 7 hectares of greenery, including secondary growths and Marine Cork Trees, according to Rachid El-Anzi, the Regional Director for Water, Forests, and Combating Desertification in Chefchaouen.
The forest is situated in the Bni Rzine district in the Chefchaouen province.
El-Anzi added that the fire was dangerous due to the hazardous terrain and the presence of a dense forest surface, in addition to strong winds that changed direction periodically.
The quick and extensive intervention by relevant authorities and organizations played a crucial role in containing the fire and limiting its spread, according to El-Anzi.
He explained that the containment operations enlisted the help of over a 100 people from his agency, local firefighting and law enforcement personnel, and the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie.
The fire comes in the midst of heat waves that are consuming Morocco and the world at large. Most notably, heatwaves sparked several wildfires earlier in July, which resulted in over 1,200 hectares of forest being burned.
