Hungary’s Foreign Minister Visits Morocco to Discuss Cooperation

Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita welcomed today, June 9, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Peter Szijjarto.

The two foreign ministers discussed various platforms for diplomacy and cooperation, whilst signing two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and an additional four agreements.

Szijjarto’s visit was a continuation of a teleconference that the two diplomats held in March, commemorating the two countries’ “excellent” relations.

The first MoU that Bourita and Szijjarto signed concerns the “framework for the discussion of subjects of common interest between the two parties.”

The two ministers signed another MoU to strengthen the partnership between the two parties “in the training of young diplomats and the exchange of experiences,” according to a joint statement.

The other four agreements concerned different fields for potential partnerships. On the economic and diplomatic front, one agreement calls for the creation of a “systematic legal assistance between the two countries,” while the other aims to strengthen the two countries’ customs institutions.

Within the cultural sphere, the two ministers signed two agreements to strengthen cultural, scientific, and sports-related cooperation through the Cultural and Scientific Cooperation Agreement which was originally signed on March 7, 1972.

The two ministers also signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of vaccination certificates issued by the respective authorities, which will help facilitate easier travel between the two countries and to grant those who have been vaccinated access.

The Hungarian minister also announced the fact that Eximbank Hungary has extended a credit line worth  $305 million (MAD 2.5 billion) for the development of joint investment opportunities between the two countries.

Szijjarto also announced the Hungarian government’s decision to increase the number of scholarships to be made available for Moroccan students.

In the concluding statements, the Hungarian minister reiterated his country’s support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara, highlighting Morocco’s efforts to develop its southern provinces.
