Rabat – Morocco is set to open 34 new higher education institutions in 2020, announced the Minister of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education, and Scientific Research, Said Amzazi.

Amzazi made the announcement during a parliamentary session on Monday, January 6.

The minister said that the government launched 17 new higher education institutions in 2019 and the number of new institutions will double in 2020.

The ministry is studying the possibility of opening two new universities in the Draa-Tafilalet region and in Morocco’s southern regions.

The southern provinces already have several higher education institutions, such as the higher schools of technology in Laayoune and Guelmim, the multidisciplinary school in Smara, and the business school in Dakhla. These already functioning establishments would facilitate the creation of a new university in southern Morocco, explained Amzazi.

The minister also mentioned the launch of construction works for a medical school in Laayoune with an allocated budget of MAD 350 million.

The new facilities would assist the implementation of advanced regionalization by ensuring the strengthening of university infrastructures in various regions of Morocco. The institutions would also facilitate access to higher education, especially in rural provinces.

There are currently 12 public universities in Morocco in eight different regions. The universities coordinate a total of 145 higher education establishments, including 61 open-access institutions and 84 others with limited access, noted Amzazi.

The establishments include schools of technology, education, business, engineering, economy, science, and medicine, along with several multidisciplinary schools.
