Rabat – Moroccan authorities are deploring the tragic situation of Syrian immigrants in Algerian territory and have denounced the inhumane attitude of Algerian authorities against these immigrants in statements made on Friday.

The Moroccan authorities “deplore the plight of these immigrants and the difficult conditions they face in the other part of the Moroccan borders and denounce the inhuman attitude of Algerian authorities against these immigrants, especially the women and children who are in a very vulnerable situation,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Moroccan authorities have recently observed the encirclement of 55 Syrian nationals by Algerian authorities at the Moroccan-Algerian border area near the town of Figuig. The ministry added that these immigrants have been authorized by Algerian authorities to reach this border area via Algerian territory in several groups since the night of April 17.

The authorities expressed their “surprise at the fact that Algerian authorities have not taken into consideration the situation of these immigrants by forcibly expelling them to the Moroccan territory, contrary to the rules of good neighborliness advocated by the Kingdom of Morocco,” the ministry underlined. It also stated that the arrival of these immigrants at this border area, despite the difficulties related to its topography and the constraints of weather conditions, “would not have been possible without the assistance and support of the Algerian authorities.”

“This is not the first time that the Algerian authorities have deported immigrants to the Moroccan territory,” the ministry noted, adding that “similar attitudes have been recorded in the past.”
