Rabat – Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita held phone calls with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, amid conflict escalation between Kyiv and Moscow.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not release details of the phone calls between Morocco’s Bourita, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
But Morocco always stressed its approach of non-interference in the conflict and maintaining good diplomatic relations with all of its partners.
The calls are also part of Morocco’s approach to maintain a constant political dialogue with other countries that it has trade or political relations with.
Morocco has been among a number of countries calling for a peaceful ending to Russia’s invasion into Ukraine.
On February 26, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it was concerned about the military escalation in Ukraine, emphasizing that it encourages all initiatives and actions that work towards a way to peacefully end the conflict. .
The ministry reiterated Morocco’s position on March 2 after questions raised after the country’s non-participation in the UN-General Assembly’s vote on a resolution that condemned Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.
Morocco said that its decision to not participate in the vote should not be subjected to any interpretation.
“The Kingdom of Morocco continues to follow with concern the evolution of the situation between Ukraine and the Russian Federation,” the ministry said.
The ministry also said that it regrets seeing a military escalation that “unfortunately resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries and which has caused human suffering on both sides, especially since this situation affects all populations and States in the region and beyond.”
