Rabat – Moroccan Minister of Health Khalid Ait Taleb has backed the adoption of the mandatory vaccine pass in public spaces on Monday, October 25, at the House of Representatives.
Last week, the Moroccan government announced that vaccine passes are to be mandatory for access to public places, sparking a firestorm of controversy among the Moroccan community.
An ongoing campaign involving work unions, public figures, and civilians has gone viral online, urging the government to reverse the decision.
Minister Ait Taleb defended the measure, emphasizing that the mandate seeks to encourage people to undergo vaccinations as quickly as possible.
“The goal is also to guard against new outbreaks of contamination that may resurface, and to prepare for winter, which is a season conducive to the appearance of new epidemic waves,” the health minister said.
The minister explained that the vaccine pass serves as an official document that will allow fully vaccinated people to gradually resume their normal life.
“Adopting the vaccination pass will undoubtedly help guard against the risk of transmission of the virus by those not yet vaccinated, and will encourage people to take their doses of the vaccine,” he added.
Ait Taleb has backed the vaccine pass mandate, stressing that the measure will “only push unvaccinated people” to adhere to the national vaccination campaign, as it is the “only way” to avoid the severe complications linked to the pandemic.
For Ait Taleb, adopting the measure is a “wise decision” to avoid further deterioration of the country’s health situation.
The minister also reiterated his call for “caution and vigilance” and to continue to interact responsibly with public authorities’ decisions to preserve public health and safety.
“Massive membership in the vaccination campaign will make it possible to end this health crisis once and for all,” he said.
As of October 25, Morocco fully vaccinated 21,526,896 people. People who received the first dose reached 23,726,514, while people who received the third dose of the vaccine amounted to 1,037,229.
