Paris – French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that French law enforcement had arrested over 1,000 people since the Euro 2016 football championship has started in the country.

The early stages of the tournament in France were marred by violence as fans clashed.

“Since the championship began, law enforcement carried out more than 1,000 arrests, as result 600 people were detained and 56 were convicted,” he said in an interview with La Provence newspaper, adding that 90,000 people were mobilized for security during the Euros, including 72,000 police officers and gendarmes.

He also noted that 34 people had been deported from France.
