Rabat – Morocco’s High Authority for Audio-visual Communication, known by its French acronym HACA, has refused the request of head of government, Abdelilah Benkirane, to take legal provisions against the Moroccan channel 2M TV for broadcasting Jennifer Lopez concert.

In a statement released on Tuesday, HACA’s Higher Council of Audiovisual Communication (CSCA) refused the head of government’s request, saying that it does not fall within its competence.

“The head of government’s request does not fall within the context of a request for an opinion regarding an issue related to audiovisual communication sector,” read the CSCA‘s statement.

Benkirane sent a letter to HACA last month calling on the authority to sanction 2M TV for broadcasting Jennifer Lopez’s concert at the opening ceremony of the 14th annual Mawazine Festival in Rabat, pointing out that the concert contained “sexually suggestive scenes”.

According to Benkirane, the broadcast of the concert “was a blatant violation of the Moroccan Constitution, of audiovisual legislation, and legal provisions related to the company SOREAD 2M.”

Based on this “flagrant violation,” Benkirane called on the High Authority for Audio-visual Communication (HACA) to take “its legal provisions regarding this violation, as it did with others.”

The controversial concert was broadcast by Moroccan channel 2M on May 29th and was viewed by millions of viewers.

During the concert and immediately following, scores of Moroccan took to social media and expressed their rejection of the “indecent” way in which Jennifer Lopez appeared on stage in “total disrespect of Morocco’s traditions and its moral and religious values.”
