Rabat – The Ministry of Tourism released a communiqué Yesterday detailing its new digital strategy to attract more tourists.
According to the press release, the Ministry hopes to increase digital development in the tourism industry since “online presence is a real opportunity to disseminate the diverse offerings of the tourism industry [in Morocco] in a new and controlled way.”
The Ministry noted that digital presence is increasingly important for tourism around the world, since 60 percent of tourists use online methods to pay for their vacations. In Morocco, according to the press release, 90 percent of tourists book their lodgings on the internet.
Morocco hopes to improve its online visibility by providing accessible, rich web content to disseminate information about tourism and investment opportunities. Additionally, it hopes to enhance communication channels for tourists, professionals, investors, and citizens.
Tourism in Morocco has increased five-fold since 1995, presumably due, in part, to globalization and the rise of the internet. Over ten million visitors visited the Kingdom in 2014, and total annual revenue from tourism is approximately 10 billion dollars.
However, the Ministry of Tourism hopes to further increase the number of tourists entering the country to make Morocco one of the world’s top 20 travel destinations by 2020.
The Ministry’s new digital strategy, coupled with efforts to increase English language websites, is an essential aspect of the 2020 plan.
