Marrakech – Casablanca has been ranked among the most traffic-congested cities in Africa, according to new data from the global database Numbeo, which evaluates congestion levels and commuting conditions in major cities worldwide.

The Moroccan economic capital ranks eighth in Africa and 72nd globally, highlighting the growing challenges of urban mobility and air pollution.

According to Numbeo’s report, each passenger in Casablanca produces an estimated 1,125.26 kg of CO₂ annually from commuting to work or school.

To offset these emissions, the study estimates that about 51.69 trees per person would be needed to produce an equivalent amount of oxygen.

On the continent, Lagos (Nigeria) tops the list of Africa’s most congested cities, followed by Nairobi (Kenya) and Cairo (Egypt).

They are trailed by three South African cities, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Johannesburg, then Alexandria (Egypt), before Casablanca takes the 8th spot. Tunis (Tunisia), Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Windhoek (Namibia), and Durban (South Africa) complete the ranking.

In Casablanca, the main modes of daily transportation include private vehicles, walking, and buses, according to Numbeo.
