Marrakech, March 30, 2012 (Yacout Info)

For the third consecutive year, the environmental association Mawarid, in collaboration with other NGOs in Marrakech, organizes the Ecolo’s Bike Ride, on the first of April under the slogan “A day without cars” which aims to place the red city in the lap of global cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen where bicycles are also many, if not more, than cars. For Association Mawarid, this day demonstrates the need to revolutionize the behavior of citizens vis-à-vis transportation. The initiative comes as an emergency response to the increasing number of vehicles in Marrakech. According to a 2009 study, the growth of the fleet in the city is about 4% per year resulting in CO2 emissions to double over the period from 1995 to 2010.

About 250 people are expected for this event, which is part of a project with wider aims of the association, entitled “Eco Mobility in Marrakech.” The event will start at 9:30 AM on April 1st 2012 at “Place 16 Novembre” in Gueliz. This event is organised in partnership of “Mountain Propre”, “Kasbah du Toubkal”, Argan Sports, and Screentex with the support of the Wilaya of Marrakech.

“Rabat Vélo” prepares its 3rd edition

Like the eco bike’s ride of Marrakech, a morning without cars will be held Sunday, April 15th in Rabat. Initiated by the National Association of Women and Sports Physical Activities (ANFAPS). By organizing this event, the ANFAPS intends to rediscover and promote cycling as a means of locomotion, with an emphasis on female participation. The starting point of the circuit was set at the Square Al-Barid. An opportunity to revisit the center of Rabat with no horn and in a relaxed atmosphere. More on the Facebook page Rabat Vélo.
