According to Egypt news agency MENA, the presidential electoral committee headed by Farouk Soltan, accepted the appeal of former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, allowing him to contest the presidential race.
According to law experts, presidential electoral committee based its decision on the fact that Shafiq gained the presidential candidate status before the issuance of the controversial law, which imposes a ten-year political isolation on senior former regime officials.
It is worth noting that Shafiq, a former senior Egyptian Air Force commander, was disqualified last Tuesday after the military council approved the new law denying him from running for presidency, along with Mubarak’s former spy chief Omar Suleiman, Ayman Nour, and two Islamist candidates Kharait al- Shater and Hazem Abu Ismail.
Appointed by Hosni Mubrak as prime minister until the latter was overthrown on February 11, 2011, Shafiq was criticized by liberal or Islamist parties, who see him as a bid by the Military council and Mubarak allies to roll back the gains of the revolution.
