President Mohamed Morsi is to give a national address at 6:00 pm (16:00 GMT) following Egypt’s adoption of a contentious new constitution in a referendum, according to his office.
The charter was adopted by 64 percent of voters in the two-stage referendum that ended last weekend amid low turnout, according to the electoral commission.
The vote was preceded by weeks of opposition protests, some of them bloody.
The opposition views the new charter, which was drafted mostly by Morsi’s Islamic allies, as a tool to possibly introduce forms of strict Islamic sharia law.
The United States, which gives $1.3 billion a year to Egypt’s influential military, has called on Morsi to work to “bridge divisions” with the largely secular opposition.
