Washington- Amid allegations of violent treatment and police brutality against Sub-Saharan immigrants in Morocco, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Youssef Amrani reacts to Western media’s portrayal of Morocco.
BBC recently published a series of articles and videos detailing Morocco’s treatment of Sub-Saharan migrants—in particular, a mini-documentary by BBC business reporter Paul Mason containing testimonials from Sub-Saharan illegal migrants alleging that they are victims of abuse by the Moroccan police.
Morocco’s reactions to these allegations took a similar stance as the migrants, with the Amrani claiming that Morocco is a “victim” of the Sub-Saharan migratory pressure, and has become a “country of destination [for migrants] by default.” However, he added, that Morocco is “firmly committed to managing its borders and readmission procedures in full compliance with the multiple dimensions of migration: development and respect for human rights.”
Though the allegations of police brutality against migrants may be unfounded and based off of a very small sample of the actual number of migrants residing in Morocco—Morocco has made a commitment to accept Sub-Saharan immigrants coming from Europe. In early June, Morocco and the European Union signed a partnership whereby illegal African immigrants in the EU are readmitted to Africa via Morocco.
