Washington – Less than an hour before the much anticipated meeting between Barack Obama and King Mohammed VI, the White House said Friday that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is “serious, realistic and credible.”
“Morocco’s autonomy plan is serious, realistic and credible,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
“It represents a potential approach that can satisfy the aspirations of the people in the Western Sahara to run their own affairs in peace and dignity.”
King Mohammed VI is due to meet President Barack Obama at 2.40 local time (7.40 Moroccan Time).
Morocco remains a key strategic ally of the United States, and has “non-NATO major ally” status, allowing it access to US arms sales.
