LONDON- International aid organization Oxfam stressed that more than 2.3 million Syrian refugees were trying to survive in harsh winter conditions and were in desperate need of shelter, food and water.
The UK-based organization stated that they were helping half a million people affected by the Syria crisis across Syria, Lebanon and Jordan and added, they aim to reach 650,000 people by the end of March 2014.
Touching onto the shivering cold in Lebanon and Jordan, Deputy Humanitarian Director at Oxfam Nigel Timmins told AA that hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees were struggling to combat the bitterly cold and wet conditions.
Timmins added, “Many families are facing winter in makeshift tents and unfinished buildings unable to afford to buy fuel to run heating stoves, extra clothing or blankets. Flimsy tents are prone to flooding and are likely to collapse under the weight of snow. These families we work with need more help urgently.”
According to Oxfam, thousands of people fled Syria due to the conflict in the country. Oxfam estimates that the population of Lebanon has increased by more than 25 percent and the population of Jordan by 6 percent since the war kicked off in Syria.
