Kinshasa – Moroccan peacekeepers deployed in the Eastern Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are conducting military activities in this sector, to hunt down Ugandan rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), control the area and protect civilians.
These operations, conducted since last week in conjunction with Guatemalan troops of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in DRC (MONUSCO), under the supervision of Moroccan peacekeepers, are mainly meant to eradicate the LRA through exerting pressure on the armed group in its operational areas, the UN said in a statement.
Last June, Moroccan peacekeepers, whose mandate has expired, had been decorated by MONUSCO, during a medal ceremony held at the headquarters of the General Staff of the Moroccan battalion in Dungu (East).
In March, Moroccan peacekeepers were awarded the MONUSCO Medal for their “sacrifice” and “dedication”.
The Moroccan contingent is deployed in the eastern province of the DRC and its troops are regularly replaced at the end of their term
