Rabat – Saudi Arabia’s grand Mufti has denied issuing a fatwa allegedly allowing a husband to chop up his wife and eat her body in the event of extreme hunger.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Saudi Arabia’s grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh stressed that the fatwa attributed to him was “false.”

Several media reports had stated that he allegedly issued a fatwa that would permit a man to kill and eat his wife or parts of her body if he is faced with extreme hunger.

“Such media reports are an attempt by enemies to distract society from their main problems at the moment,” he said.

“This is also an attempt to tarnish the image of Islam, which has honored human-beings without discrimination between men and women.”

The supposed fatwa, which was in fact authored by Moroccan satirical columnist Israfil Al Maghribi, was first published on the Moroccan news outlet Goud on March 29. The column called “E’ Ttniz E’ssyassi” (literally meaning Political Satire) is a platform used by the author to criticize and ridicule politicians and Islamic clerics.

However, the fake story was taken seriously by pro-Iranian website al-Jumohouria, which carried the story without backing it up with evidence or specifying where or when the alleged fatwa had been issued.
