Rabat- The owner of the truck that collided with a bus last week and resulted in the deaths of 33 people near the city of Tan Tan was already facing charges of fuel smuggling.
According to Arabic-speaking weekly Al Ayam, anti-smuggling customs officers in the city of Agadir seized two semi-trailers owned by the said man for smuggling contraband oil.
The same source added that the owner of the busted trucks is a Casablanca-based businessman who has been in the fuel-smuggling business for over 20 years.
Preliminary conclusions of the investigation into the Tan Tan tragedy revealed that the truck’s driver added a hidden tank to his vehicle to smuggle fuel bought from Morocco’s southern provinces.
Fuel smugglers usually fit their vehicles with extra hidden tanks to ship smuggled hydrocarbons from the country’s southern provinces to the north where fuel prices are high.
