Rabat – British gas exploration company Sound Energy confirmed the discovery of natural gas at their Tendrara drilling site in northeast Morocco on Monday. The flow is “significantly above initial expectations and represents a highly commercial rate,” according to the company’s statement.
Sound Energy finished drilling the well on June 6th, with a depth of 2,665 meters. They announced on July 11th that the first gas flow had begun.
The company reported that the pressure at the bottom of the hole, as well as the lack of gas/water contract in previous wells in the area, suggests “the possibility of a significant gas column within a continuous extended structure.” They added that an additional well, about 30km to the northeast, will be required to confirm this.
This well, TE-6, will be followed by TE-7 and TE-8. The rig for TE-7 is already complete, and drilling will begin in August. Planning for TE-8 will begin later this year.
Meanwhile, an earthquake near Kenitra may have resulted in the temporary closure of a gas pipeline, according to Circle Oil, a British gas producer in Morocco.
