Rabat – Environment Minister Hakima El Haite announced on Tuesday the future creation of a climate fund during the United Nations climate change conference in Marrakesh in November.
The COP22 conference will help to “establish a roadmap for the financing of a range of initiatives, like Energy for Africa…or the new Moroccan initiative forthe [environmental] adaptation of African culture,” El Haite told Jeune Afrique.
A total of 28 projects that are part of the United Nations climate program still need capital, the minister said, adding that the new fund will help eliminate monetary constraints to environmental protection.
In other COP22 related news, COP22 Commissioner Abdeladim Lhafi noted the role of Rabat’s National Zoo in the preservation of species as the effects of climate change escalate during the inauguration of a new museum itinerary on Tuesday.
The UN Climate Change Conference will take place from November 7 to 18 in Morocco’s largest tourist city with over 600 parallel events occurring around the COP – or Conference of the Parties – village, where the summit’s official proceedings will occur.
United Arab Emirates Climate Change and Environment Minister Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi affirmed his country’s full support for the upcoming climate conference.
“We are confident of Morocco’s success in organizing the multi-faceted convention and they have out full support to guarantee its success,” Al Zayoudi said on Friday.
Last year’s COP21 conference took place in Paris. Eighty-five of the 197 Parties to the Convention have ratified the climate change agreement negotiated last year.
