Mounib: FGD Will not Form Opposition Coalition with PAM

Rabat – On Monday, Secretary General of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) Nabila Mounib said that the PSU’s decision to join the opposition coalition means that the FGD will not be with the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) and what she calls the other administrative parties that “adopted the position of the faithful politicians.”

In an interview with Moroccan news outlet Lakome, Mounib asked, “how did the PAM double its parliamentary seats in comparison with the 2011 election, from 47 to 102 seats?”

Mounib said that “PAM’s concern is not to fight corruption or the absence of democracy, [instead] it only opposes the Justice and Development Party (PJD), which has shown a strong cohesion despite efforts to sow division within it.”

Mounib affirmed that the PSU “will form an independent and fierce opposition coalition to build democracy and fight corruption outside of the [other] administrative parties.”

Mounib also noted that 20 members of the Federation of Democratic Left (FGD), of which PSU is a member, will ”support the members of the parliament who were elected in last Friday’s legislative elections.”

Since the beginning of this year’s elections, Mounib has supported the FGD’s stance of being a part of the opposition, rather than the government, in order to “amend the constitution in ways that are critical for Morocco’s political development.”

The FGD’s efforts among the opposition will “build toward the next step in Morocco, clearer conditions for democracy, and the FGD will increase pressure until a huge political front for these revisions is formed,” Mounib told CNN last month.
