Rabat – On Monday, French magazine Jeune Afrique wrote a piece about the reasons behind Salaheddine Mezouar, Secretary General of the National Rally of Independent’s (RNI) submission to resign from his role of president of the party.
According to one of RNI’s members, quoted by Jeune Afrique, “the outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs could not juggle between the new governmental activities and his responsibilities as the President of COP 22,” which is scheduled to be held from November 7 through 18 in Marrakech.
The weekly magazine added that “RNI’s electoral results in the legislative elections last Friday, October 7, also pushed Mezouar to submit his resignation during the meeting of the party that was held on Sunday.”
“I take the responsibility of the party’s results in these legislative elections and I choose to withdraw,” Mezouar said during the RNI meeting.
The magazine reported, “Since RNI has formed a coalition with the Justice and Development Party (PJD) for a new government in 2013, Mezouar was placed in a critical position vis-à-vis PJD and its leader Abdelilah Benkirane.” Adding that “the RNI’s political bureau has not validated Mezouar’s resignation yet, and wait King Mohammed VI to appoint the new head of Government in the coming days.”
The RNI ranked fourth with 37 seats, down from 52 in the poll of 2011 legislative elections.
