Rabat – Morocco’s unemployment rate decreased to 9.6 percent in the third quarter of the year 2016, against 10.1 percent a year earlier, that is a drop of 0.5 point, according to the High Planning Commission (HCP).

With a fall of 64,000 people (59,000 in the urban area and 5,000 in the rural one), active jobless population increased, between the 3rd quarter of 2015 and that of 2016, from 1,206,000 to 1,142,000 jobless individuals, that is a drop by 5.3% nationally, said HCP in an information note on the situation of the labor market in the third quarter of 2016.

Between the two periods, unemployment rate rose from 15.1 percent to 14.3 percent in the urban area and stagnated at 4.3 percent in the rural area, said HCP, underlining that the most significant decline in unemployment rates was registered among people holding a degree (-1.1 points) and young people aged 25 to 34 (-0.8 points).

However, the unemployment rate for young people aged 15-24 years increased by 0.4 points, the source added.
