Rabat – Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred has reportedly been cleared of “American woman’s [civil] sexual assault charges,” according to Rifat Harb, the woman’s lawyer. However, the criminal sexual assault charges remain pending.
Speaking to Al Arabiya English, the lawyer said, “The civil matter I am handling on behalf of my client against Mr. Saad Lamjarred has been finalized. My client has no intention of pursuing the criminal matter.”
Harb went on to say, “My client has made it clear that she no longer wishes to pursue the criminal matter. Any news about me going to France to seek extradition of Mr. Lamjarred is false” and, “While the final decision remains for the District Attorney’s office in New York.”
Last May, the New York Daily News reported that the alleged victim claimed Lamjarred had “sexually assaulted and beaten her in a Brooklyn apartment in 2010.”
Ahead of his concert, which was scheduled to take place on October 31 at the Palace of Congress in Paris, Lamjarred was arrested for the second time, this time at the Marriot Hotel in Paris for “the alleged sexual assault of Laura Prioul, a 20-year-old French woman.” While he awaits trial on this charge Lamjarred remains in custody at the Fleury-Merogis prison. A trial date has yet to be scheduled.
French lawyer Eric Dupont Moretti, one of three attorneys hired by the Moroccan singer to defend Lamjarred, told Hespress earlier this month, “The trial of Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred has not been scheduled thus far.” Moretti went on to dismiss recent rumors circulating on social media regarding Lamjarred’s hearing as baseless.
“The board of Lamjarred’s lawyers, which includes myself, Brahim Rachidi, and Jean Marc Fedida, is working to set a hearing date for the near future,” Moretti said. “We have requested that the court urge the 20-year-old alleged victim, Laura Prioul, to appear in court as well,” he added.
