Rabat – Morocco said on Monday that Morocco’s position on different international crises “are not subjected to personal improvisations and King Mohammed VI is the only guarantor of the continuity of its diplomatic positions and its international commitments,” Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday.
The statement was issued after Morocco’s Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane, accused in a statement to Quds Press Russia of being a party in the violence against the Syrian people.
“What the Syrian regime backed by Russia is doing to the Syrian people surpasses all humanitarian limits,” Benkirane said. The Moroccan official said went on to add that Moscow should intervene and find a solution to the crisis in Syria rather than deepening it.
Following the statement, Morocco’s Foreign minister received, on Monday at the ministry headquarters, Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Rabat Valery Vorobiev at his request, said a statement by the ministry.
During the meeting, the Russian ambassador voiced Moscow’s concern over the media statement, given by a Moroccan top government official, accusing Russia of being responsible for the destruction of Syria, said the foreign affairs ministry in a statement.
In response, the foreign minister underlined, first of all, the attachment of the Kingdom of Morocco to preserving the strong ties with the Russian Federation, which were reinforced by the Deep Strategic Partnership Declaration, concluded on the occasion of the Royal Visit to Moscow last March, the same source said.
He recalled the clear stance of Morocco on the Syrian crisis and which is based on four elements, namely the commitment to a peaceful solution guaranteeing Syria’s stability, preserving its national unity and territorial integrity and the concern over the serious human tragedies caused by the Syrian crisis, said the statement.
It also involves concrete actions undertaken, upon the instructions of the King, to alleviate the sufferings of the brotherly Syrian people, mainly the setting up since 2012 of a field hospital in the Zaatari Camp, the exceptional regularization of the situation of Syrian refugees in Morocco and the supply of substantial humanitarian aid.
The position of Morocco is also based on the conviction that solving the Syrian crisis requires a strong involvement by the international community, mainly superpowers that can act on the field and alter the course of events.
In this regard, the Kingdom of Morocco respects the role and action by the Russian Federation in this issue as in other international issues, the statement added.
Finally, the foreign minister assured his interlocutor that the Kingdom of Morocco, as a responsible and credible State on the international scene, sets its official diplomatic positions in terms of the values, principles and interests governing its foreign policy.
These official stances come following a thorough evaluation and an interaction and validation process involving several stakeholders and institutions. They cannot, given their complexity and seriousness, be the subject of random improvisations or express personal viewpoints, the same source noted.
The King remains the guarantor of the consistency and continuity of Morocco’s diplomatic positions, and of its international commitments, the statement concluded.
