Rabat – Following a meeting between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Salaheddine Mezouar, and the President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, the President declared his full support for Morocco’s request to join the Economic Community of West African States.

The meeting took place in Niamey, Niger while Mezouar was there to deliver King Mohamed VI’s message to join ECWAS to the President.

President Issoufou expressed his full support for the request, Maghreb Arab Press reported. “ECOWAS is a natural space for Morocco, given its historical and friendly relations maintained by the Kingdom with the countries of the region, but also with regard to the initiatives and actions undertaken by the King and by Morocco in favor of this space,” President Issoufou said.

During their meeting the two men discussed several issues which fall under the auspices of the mission entrusted to Issoufou at the African Summit of Action, chaired by King Mohamed VI.

According to Mezouar, topics included climate change and its affect on the continent, particularly in the Sahel region. Sustainable development, desertification and clean energy development were also covered, as well as strengthening the trade links between countries in the region.

The Nigerien President reiterated his support for Morocco joining ECOWAS, lauding King Mohammed VI’s action on behalf of Africa’s development and the development of the region in particular.

Morocco’s integration into ECOWAS is predicted to benefit the region significantly in support of economic programs and projects. These will, in turn, help to support programs furthering the cause of human development in the region.
