Toronto – Investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s counter-intelligence team admit it could turn out to be completely innocent, but computer analysts are calling the activity “odd,” according to CNN.
From May 4 until September 23 of 2016, one particular Trump Organization server recorded 2,820 hits from a Russian bank server, looking for its IP address. While there is admittedly no evidence that the two servers actually ended up communicating, the activity has raised some flags in the intelligence community and more than a few eyebrows with computer researchers.
A Russia-based Alfa Bank server accounted for 80 percent of all inquiries to the Trump server during that time period. There have, as yet, been no allegations of wrongdoing, but investigators have been stymied by conflicting information and explanations from the parties involved.
Alfa Bank claimed at one point that the inquiries were in response to a marketing campaign the Trump Organization group had been engaged in. The marketing company handling Trump business at the time in question, however, denies that any campaign was taking place.
The New York Times was one of the first news agencies to report on the story. At the time it broke, they quoted the FBI as saying that there could be an innocuous explanation” for it all. Supporting that theory, they were quick to point out that if two parties wanted to keep their electronic communication a secret, this would not be the way to do it.
Alfa Bank is denying they have any connection with the Trump Organization. “Alfa Bank does not have and has never had any special or exclusive internet connection with Mr. Trump or his entities.”
Meanwhile, computer researchers are maintaining the activity is a “strange coincidence that merits a closer look.” The investigation, coinciding with the investigation into Russian involvement in the election, continues.
